Summary

Forge ascii map as a png

I recreated the image and scaled it so that it was under 12MP so Mediawiki could create a thumbnail for it.

# make it huge so we can scale it with good details

pango-view --dpi 300 --font=mono -qo image.png /tmp/map.txt
gm convert -scale 22.69% image.png scale.png

# 22.69% is: sqrt(12000000) / sqrt(MP of the 300 dpi image) - rounded to 2 decimal places.

pango-view is a linux utility that is installed in most GUI systems.

gm is GraphicsMagick - the replacement for ImageMagick.
