Illithid have an afinity to mental spells including impressive immunity to most mental manipulation. Illithid's mental aptitude allows them to deal more damage with mental-type spells. However, where Illithid are strong with mental-type spells, they are not very apt with kinetic spells. Upon delivering a terminal kill to an enemy, an Illithid absorbs the life essence of the fallen and adds it to their own. Note: This racial ability is innate and does not require any specific action to initiate. It operates naturally, like breathing.
