Lore tells of a hole in a cave under a lizard infested bog so incredibly deep and wide that it could only have been made by the passing of a huge creature. Indead, there are now many gigantic insects inhabiting this underground chasm where only foolish mortals tread.

Level Range: 48-50

Builder: Slinky

Directions

Walking route from Aelmon: 16e, [e], 2e, n, e, 2n, 2w, 2n, 2w, 5n, 3d, 2w, d.

Portaling point(s) suggested: Tapeworm.

Connections

The Abyss connects to the Crescent Bog above it via an underwater cave. At present, it connects with no other areas.

Navigation

The Abyss centers around a tall vertical shaft that characters must be flying to traverse. This shaft's topmost room exits upward into an underwater room within the Crescent Bog; so, if you suddenly find yourself in a watery room while navigating this area, then you've gone too far up. The tapeworm usually stands stationary just below this top entrance, though sometimes it appears in the bottommost room of this shaft. About midway down this shaft is a level where it connects with four toyshop rooms, one in each cardinal direction. On most other levels, one or two rooms adjoin this shaft, each of these containing a single stationary giant insect; from each of these lairs, one exit returns to this shaft on the same level while another exit returns to this shaft, also, but on the toyshop level instead (which can potentially be rather disorienting to those unfamiliar with this area). At the bottom of this shaft is a secret door leading north into a treasure room (see Treasure-Hunting); this door may be bashed open but may not be passed magically. Various elven mobs wander about this area.

Adventuring

This area has little gear of interest but it can be a great place for level 35-40 groups to gain experience, potentially providing more XP per kill than hero areas like Shashwat Nisha with less effort. All those who come to The Abyss to fight should be flying and all tanks should be able to see hidden mobs, via either alertness, awareness, detect hidden, or heighten senses. Although all mobs here are hidden, none here are aggressive or assistive (except perhaps for elves when fighting other elves) or wimpy, which is a great advantage for combatants here.

Fighting groups normally avoid attacking both the evil-aligned tapeworm and the several good-aligned wandering elven mobs, because (1) they are in sanctuary and (2) they cast offensive spells at random group members during combat; however, both explorers and treasure-hunters should note that this tapeworm carries both (1) a book introducing this area and (2) a key to its hidden treasure room. Fighting groups normally kill all eight other mobs here, which are neutral-aligned giant insects and such, which both eat corpses and pick up objects from the ground. Each of these eight mobs carries a piece of candy that unlocks one of eight bears (two in each toyshop room), each of which contains a piece of cursed gear; these candies may also be sacrificed for, normally, about 100 gold each.

Tanks normally portal to the tapeworm and then move up and down this area's tall vertical shaft, scanning on each level and, whenever they scan an insect/whatever in its shaftside lair, leaving this shaft to kill it and then returning to this shaft via the same door. Under ideal circumstances, groups may kill all eight of these mobs in almost precisely the same amount of time that it takes for this area to repop, thus being able to fight continuously in this area without having to move elsewhere; other groups may not be so fortunate.
